Mandel’s Musings – Red Ryan, Jon Gruden Could be Next Jets Head Coach; Where is Soto Going? Ty Jerome (Who?)

Ryan and Gruden are available coaches with track records of success

I hope Tommy DeVito or Drew Lock throw three TDs every game and the Giants lose their last seven. This franchise (2-8) needs a talent overhaul. It may also need a coaching change because a 2-9 team has to have a scapegoat to blame. After the post-game comments which were more like indictments of Head Coach Brian Daboll, from key Giants players Dexter Lawrence and Malik Nabers, both of whom accused the team of “playing soft,” the only scapegoat would appear to be Daboll. He’s a good man and a good football coach. But, we wish Brian happy trails on his career journey.

One of my son’s childhood friends, a kid named Ty Jerome, has 27 points at the half tonight for the Cavaliers, 20 points in the second quarter. We watched the boys play together for several years. My boy became the point guard for his high school team, a very successful program in NYC. Jerome grew to 6’5″ and led the University of Virginia to a national championship. Now in his fifth year in the NBA (and fifth team), Jerome appears to have found his niche with the Cleveland Cavaliers. In his last two games, he’s scored a career high 29 points, following that up with 26 points. The young man has figured it out. Wishing him well.

Will current Chicago Cubs outfielder, Cody Bellinger, rumored for years to be interested in becoming a Yankee, finally put on the pinstripes? If Juan Jose Soto Pacheco (his real name) leaves to grab Steve Cohen’s free agent money or Dodger money, Bellinger, believed to be on the trading block by Cubs management, will be a major target for the Yankees. The connection? His dad, Clay was a Yankee in the 1970s.

Rex Ryan, former head coach of the New York Jets, took the Jets to two conference championship games in consecutive seasons with Mark Sanchez as the quarterback. That was a very good coaching job, if you’ve ever seen Mark Sanchez play quarterback. Ryan, a studio commentator for ESPN, is using his national platform to openly and outwardly campaign to be rehired by the Jets as their next head coach after this debacle of a season. Rex never pulled any punches. He told you exactly how he felt, leaving no doubt where he stood. Both Rex Ryan and Jon Gruden would be welcome head coaches for the New York Jets, from the fans’ point of view. The incompetent owner, Woody Johnson, from the Johnson & Johnson family of gazillions, will hopefully get assigned to England again to be the U.S. ambassador to England. Maybe then, someone intelligent will start to run this franchise.
